 Better ways to sleep in Islam

Are you having trouble sleeping at night? Here are the best and better ways to sleep according to Quran verses and hadiths by Prophet(S.W.T.).


Sleep is indeed a great blessing of Allah. Sleep allows one’s soul and body to revive and grow. Surah Ar-Rum in the Quran states; “
And of his signs is your sleep by day and by night and your seeking of his great bounty. Indeed, in that are signs for those who listen”.

Sleep deprivation can cause a great deal of pain, discomfort, and other health issues. Modern sleep scientists believe that sleep deprivation has harmful effects on mental concentration, memory, mood, and quality of life. We will be discussing the Sunnah ways to sleep better

7 Sunnah practices for better sleep

  1. Early to bed and early to rise- 

The Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said, “One should not sleep before the night prayer, nor have discussions after it” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 568; Muslim, 647. [1]

The theory behind this Hadith is when one sleeps before Isha, He/She could miss the Isha prayer, but if you have anyone to wake you up because you feel drowsy, then you may sleep. Also, when one sits to talk after Isha, they may talk all night and miss Qiyaam-al-Lail or even the Fajr prayer. The Prophet (P.B.U.H.) told his companions that Allah(S.W.T.) bless the early morning work. This helps in sleeping better and faster at night. 

  1.   Dusting and cleaning the bed before sleeping

The Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said, “When anyone of you goes to bed, he should take hold of the hem of his lower garment and then should clean (his bed) with the help of that and then should recite the name of Allah” since cleanliness is half of our deen. This will help in sleeping better as the absence of dust or insects could disturb your sleep. 

  1.   Reciting Du’a before sleeping: 

These Duas can help you sleep better when feeling anxious as it will calm your mind and soothe your nerves. 

  • Blowing into the cupped palms and reciting the three mu’awwidhaat [Surahs seeking refuge with Allah, the last three surahs of the Qur’an]
  • It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said; The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) put me in charge of guarding the collected zakah of Ramadan. Someone came and started to rummage in the food. I took hold of him and said, I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He [the one who came and rummaged in the food] said, When you go to your bed, recite Aayat al-Kursi, and you will be protected by Allah, and no devil will come near you until morning. The Prophet(S.W.T.) said; “He told you the truth even though he is a liar. That was a devil.”
  • “Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah every night, they will suffice him.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5009) and Muslim (808).
  • The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said to me: “Recite ‘Say: O disbelievers’ [al-Kaafiroon 109], then go to sleep at the end of it, for it is a disavowal of shirk.”

When the Prophet(S.W.T.) wanted to sleep, he would say, “Allahumma bismika ahyaa wa amoot (O Allah, in Your name I live and die)”, and when he woke up he would say “Al-hamdu Lillaah alladhi ahyaanaa ba’ da ma amaatanaa wa ilayhi al-nushoor (Praise be to Allah Who has brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection).” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (6324).

  • Al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazibwas narrated that the Prophet(S.W.T.) said; “When you go to bed, do wudoo’ as if for prayer, then lie down on your right side, then say: ‘Allahummah aslamtu nafsi ilayk, wa wajahtu wajhi ilayk, wa fawwadtu amri ilayk, wa alja’tu zahri ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, laa malja’a wa laa manjaa minka illa ilayk. Aamantu bi kitaabik alladhi anzalt, wa bi nabiyyik alladhi arsalt (O Allah, I submit myself to You, I turn my face to You, I delegate my affairs to You, and I rely totally on You, out of fear and hope of You. There is no refuge or sanctuary from You except in You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent).’ Then if you die, you will have been killed on the fitrah, (natural state), so make these the last words you speak.”
  • It was narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib that Faatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) went to the Prophet (S.W.T.) and asked him for a servant. He said: “Shall I not tell you of something that is better for you than that? When you go to sleep, glorify Allah (by saying Subhaan Allah) thirty-three times, praise Allah (by saying Al-hamdu Lillah) thirty-three times, and magnify Him (by saying Allahu akbar) thirty-four times.” And I have never abandoned [that practice] since then. It was said: Not even on the night of Siffeen? He replied: “Not even on the night of Siffeen.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5362) and Muslim (2727).

  • It was narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah(S.W.T.) went to his bed, he said; “Al-hamdu Lillaah alladhi at’ amanaa wa saqaanaa wa kafaanaa wa aawanaa fakam mimman laa kaafi lahu wa laa mu’wi (Praise be to Allah, Who fed us and gave us to drink, and Who is sufficient for us and has sheltered us, for how many have none to suffice them or protect them).”
  • It was narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar that he instructed a man, when he went to his bed, to say; “Allahumma khalaqta nafsi wa anta tawaffaaha, laka mamaatuha wa mahyaaha. In ahyaytaha fahfazha wa in amattaha faghfir laha. Allahumma inni as’aluka al-‘aafiyah (O Allah, You have created my soul, and it is for You to take it in death. Its death and its life are in Your hand. If You cause it to live then protect it and if You cause it to die then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You to keep me safe and sound).” A man said to him: Did you hear that from ‘Umar? He said: From one who is better than ‘Umar, from the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Narrated by Muslim (2712).

  1. Getting Enough sleep

Islam also stresses the significance of getting enough sleep. One Hadith by the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) in Sahih Al-Bukhari (S.B.) says; “If anyone of you feels drowsy while praying he should go to bed (sleep) till his slumber is over.”

The Prophet (P.B.U.H.) told one of his companions (Ibn Amr) who was praying the whole night; “Offer prayers and also sleep at night, as your body has a right on you.” 

When you get enough sleep, you will wake up refreshed in the morning.

  1.   Perform ablution (wudoo) before going to bed and supplicate

It is reported in Sahih Muslim that one of the companions said that the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) told him; “Whenever you go to bed, perform ablution like that for the prayer, and lie on your right side.” 

  1.     Sleep position

Based on the practice (Sunnah) and recommendations of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.), many Muslims sleep on their right side. Notably, in the early part of sleep. Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) said; “Whenever you go to bed, perform ablution like that for the prayer, and lie on your right side” [Sahih Muslim 2710). 

In the description of the sleep of the Prophet (P.B.U.H.), a Hadith states, “When the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) wants to go to sleep, he puts his right hand under his cheek”. This can also help you sleep better with a cold as sleeping on the right side improves circulation. Sleeping sideways allows you to sleep better for your back since all the weight won’t be on your spine. This act is also proven in scientific research.

Further, the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) once told a man who was lying on his stomach, “Allah and his Prophet dislike this position” [Sunan Al-Tirmidhi 2768]

  1.   Turning off light before sleep

It is narrated that the Prophet ((P.B.U.H.) said, “Put out lamps when you go to bed, shut the doors, and cover water and food containers” [Sahih Bukhari 5301]. This resembles the present scientific finding that it is essential to maintain a dark environment during the sleeping period. So as not to disrupt the regular rhythm or our Biological Cycle.
