How to cure depression in Islam

How to cure depression in Islam

In this article, we will look upon ways in how to cure depression in Islam and how to face such circumstances and what to do during depression according to the Islamic approach.

First of all, breathe! Remind yourself that Allah (S.W.T.) is with you. Allah (S.W.T.) is watching over you at all times. He is testing you because he loves you, so enjoy yourself too, nor has He forgotten you! He is only making you stronger to face life hurdles.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Islam, this life is full of trials. There is no stage of our lives except that we face it in anxiety, grief, stress, worries, and ultimately fall into depression. As Allah says in the Quran:

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him, we will return. Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.” – Quran (2:155-157)

Therefore, know that you are not alone in this!

Allah (SWT) didn’t send any revelation for six months, due to which Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) had a phase of depression. He was in a very troublesome mind state, having negative and sad feelings. All this was because he (PBUH) was assuming that Allah (SWT) was unhappy with him and forgotten him. Don’t we feel the same at times? When our Khushu in Salah has wavered, we feel very low and it appears as thou Allah (S.W.T.) doesn’t love us anymore?

Surah Ad-Duha

Well, Allah (S.W.T.) then sent upon him a surah. A surah from which we all can learn lessons from and be hopeful that bad days do not last long and Allah (S.W.T.) is always watching upon us. This surah is none other than Surah Ad- Duha. It can uplift your mood while considering and pondering the words. This surah deals with how to cure depression while having faith in Allah (S.W.T.).

In the first three verses, Allah (S.W.T.) considers negative feelings. The feeling of being worthless, being in the state of spiritual depression, and replaces it with positive energy and optimism. In the second three verses, it observes society in making you feel useless and pointless. Allah (S.W.T.) acknowledged these feelings and filled them in a positive approach. The final three verses direct the person to do something everlasting. To channel your negativity into something worthwhile.

Allah S.W.T. is giving the Qasam ( Oath ) of the time of barakah, the beginning of a new day, hope as well as opportunities. To not look at the past but the future. That everything in life is not doom and gloom.

Here Allah S.W.T. is giving the Qasam (Oath) of the time of night. When everything is calm, the time of sleep. To remind you that after darkness, there is still light!

How to cure depression in Islam

To stop feeling that you are worthless, and your lord has not abandoned you. Allah S.W.T. does not despise any believer. Do not feel alone, your lord is with you even if the entire world has looked away from you.

The future will be better than the present. Always be optimistic and look towards the real goal of life, and that is the Akhirah.

How to cure depression in Islam

You shall get it, (maybe not whatever it is you specifically want) but enough to make you happy and content.

In the above three verses, Allah S.W.T. is asking rhetorical questions, to remind you, make you feel blessed and loved when Allah S.W.T. helped you in your difficult times. This gives us an example as to why we should always ponder upon the blessings of Allah S.W.T. at all times. It keeps us going rather than being confused as to why nothing is happening now as we want it to be.

In the last three verses, Allah S.W.T. is asking you to be productive and not just sit around. To take your negative energy and contribute and support the society with whatever you can. Also, to do something meaningful and valuable to you and those around you. Hence consider supporting an orphan or beggar.

When we give happiness to others in return Allah S.W.T. gives happiness to us back. SubhanAllah!

How to cure depression through Quran and Sunnah

  • Make lots of Dua: In Islam Du’aa’ is very important, so much so that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Du’aa’ is worship.”  Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3372; Abu Dawood, 1479; Ibn Maajah, 3828; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2590. This can help cure depression through Dua.
  • Eating Talbeenah: The Arabs use Talbeenah as one of the treatments for various illnesses. The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said concerning it: “Talbeenah brings comfort to the sick person and it lessens grief.” Narrated by al-Bukhari, 5101; Muslim, 2216. This is indeed beneficial to cure depression without medication.
  • Remember Allah (S.W.T.), Do Dhikr: Remembering Allah brings comfort to your heart and will cure depression and anxiety, In Shaa Allah. Allah (S.W.T.) says in the Holy Quran: “Those who believe, and whose hearts find peace in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace.”(Quran, 13:28)
  • Allah also says “And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” Quran (20:124)

Some of the Dua’s that help are:

  • In al-Saheehayn it was reported from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say, when he felt distressed:   “La ilaha ill-Allah al-‘Azeem ul-Haleem, Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah Rabb il-‘arsh il-‘azeem, Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah Rabbis-samawati wa Rabbil-ard wa Rabb il-‘arsh il-kareem (there is no god except Allah, the All-Mighty, the Forbearing; there is no god except Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne; there is no god except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the noble Throne).”
  • And it was reported from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say when something upset him: “Yaa Hayyu yaa Qayyoom, bi Rahmatika astagheeth (O Ever-Living One, O Everlasting One, by Your mercy I seek help).”
  • And it was reported that Asmaa’ bint ‘Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: ‘Shall I not teach you some words to say when you feel distressed? ‘Allah, Allah, Rabbi laa ushriku bihi shai’an (Allah, Allah, my Lord, I do not associate anything with Him).’
  • It was reported from ‘Abd-Allah ibn Mas’ood that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and says:   “Allaahumma innee ‘abduka wa ibn ‘abdika wa ibn amatika, naasiyati bi yadika, maadin fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadaa’uka, as’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghaybi ‘andak an taj’ala al-Qur’aana rabee’ qalbi wa noor sadri wa jalaa’a huzni wa dhahaaba hammi”

(O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every Name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur’an the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety)’ but Allah will take away his sorrow and grief, and give him in their stead joy.”

  • “Allahumma rahmataka ‘arjoo falaa takilnee ‘ilaa nafsee tarfata ‘aynin wa ‘aslih li sha’nee kullahu, laa’ilaaha ‘illaa ‘anta”. Translation: O Allah, I hope for your mercy. Do not leave me to myself even for the blinking of an eye (i.e. a moment). Correct all of my affairs for me. There is none worthy of worship but you. (Abu Dawood)

Offering Salah

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) in surah Maryam: “Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up As-Salaat (the prayers) [i.e. made their Salaat (prayers) to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times] and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell. Except those who repent and believe (in the Oneness of Allah and His Messenger Muhammad), and work righteousness. Such will enter Paradise and they will not be wronged in aught.” [Maryam 19:59-60]

Allah mentioned those who abandon the prayer and follow their desires, except those who repent and believe, which indicates that at the time when they are neglecting their prayers and following their desires, they are not believers. And therefore, they will fall into depression, because they are going against the nature of their soul. As eating is the food of our body, so is Salah, the food of our soul. And Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran: “O you who believe! Resort to patience and prayer; surely, Allah is with the patient.” (Quran, 2:153)

Recite the Holy Quran to help cure depression

The Quran is the best form of remembrance of Allah Almighty as it brings comfort and peace to the heart. Our beloved Prophet (S.A.W.) said“Quran is the best remedy for the illness of the soul” (Bukhari). This is surely helpful for curing depression naturally.

Don’t Procrastinate:

Laziness allows a person to sit idle and think unnecessarily. This can lead to stress and depression. In order to cure depression on your own, you need to be active and fight away your laziness. The Prophet (PBUH) used to seek refuge in Allah from laziness.  The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) entered the mosque one day and saw an Ansari man whose name was Abu Umaamah.

The prophet said: “O Abu Umamah, why do I see you sitting in the mosque when it is not the time for prayer? He replied: “Worries and debts, O Messenger of Allah”. Prophet(P.B.H.U.): “Shall I not teach you some words which, if you say them, Allah will take away your worries and pay off your debts?” He said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah”. The prophet replied: “Say, morning and evening, “Allaahumma inni a‘oodhu bika min al-hammi wa’l-hazani, wa a’udhu bika minal-‘ajzi wa’l-kasali, wa a’oodhu bika min al-jubni wa’l-bukhli, wa a’oodhi bika min ghalabat il-dayni wa qahri al-rijaal”

“(O Allah, I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, and I seek refuge with You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge with You from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek refuge with You from being heavily in debt and from being overcome by men).”

Seek Forgiveness for Your Sins:

  • When one seeks repentance from Allah, he/she will be relieved of the anxiety and depression that is caused by his sins. The Almighty Allah loves to forgive people.  It was narrated from al-Agharr al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I ask Allah for forgiveness one hundred times a day.” Narrated by Muslim (2702).
  • Know that with hardship comes ease- Allah ((S.W.T.)) promises His believer that “For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease” (Quran 94:5).
  • Allah names: Learning and understanding the names of Allah gives you a huge perspective about Allah’s ((S.W.T.)) nature and His qualities. The names can soothe your heart and help you cure depression without medication.
  • Know that Allah (S.W.T.) is with you at all times: Having Tawakkal and trust on Allah by continuously remembering Him throughout your day. After you have established a plan you intend to follow, put your trust in the wisest and the All-Knowing that is Allah Almighty. Allah says in the Holy Quran: “When you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah”(Quran 3: 159). Allah says in the Quran “And for those who fear Allah, He always prepares a way out, and He provides for him from sources he never could imagine. And if anyone puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is Allah for him. For Allah will surely accomplish His purpose: verily, for all things has Allah appointed a due proportion.” (Quran, 65: 2-3)

Muslim community to help cure depression

Dear Muslims, if somebody comes to you saying that they are battling with depression, then please do not dismiss them. Tell them that this is a test from Allah and you need to pass this test. Sometimes, Allah tests His people with hardship to see who will remain grateful despite it. Keep in mind that He watches us always and everything does not go unrecorded.

Remember that the source to ultimate happiness is the connection you have with your lord, not from wealth or people. You have to be a high achiever to get the best results in the hereafter.

May Allah (S.W.T.) overwhelm us with His mercy, give us patience, guide us in order to better ourselves. Grant us the highest levels of paradise in the companionship of the prophets and the righteous.  May Allah (S.W.T.) help us overcome our depression and anxiety.

Disclaimer: Doing these things might not necessarily ‘cure’ a person from depression as per the title. The cure lies in the hope of  Allah(S.W.T.).
